Antique silver salt shaker, Chinese export silver, circa1880. The body of the shaker is aclassic Asian gourd form. Each segment of the “gourd” is embellished withapplied vegetal forms, mostly sprigs of flowers, and one decorated with stalksof bamboo.

The piece is marked on the bottom with Chinese characters,another mark which appears to be the letter C, and the letters WS (or possiblySM). This mark may indicate the tradename Wo Shing, originally based in Canton, opening a shop in Shanghai towardsthe end of the 19th century.If that is the case, the C mark may indicate that this was produced inCanton. The silver seems to be somewhat lower silver content than sterling, around90%, which is common for Chinese silver from this period. The shaker measures 1¾” tall and 1 5/8” in diameter. Thepiece is in excellent condition, there is minor surface wear and the top has asmall area that is dented so that the dome is slightly flattened. The shaker weighs 1.1 oz.
