Fresh from an estate in Easton, Massachusetts, is this IDENTIFIED portrait of Civil War Union soldier Frederick S. Worthen! Wearing his government-issue single-breasted shell jacket, he stands proudly facing the camera, holding his kepi (or forage cap) in his right hand, while his left grips a saber. He wears light colored pants with a reinforced seat. He has a neatly trimmed beard, highlighted cheeks, and a pristine uniform complete with sword belt, U.S. Army 1851 eagle belt buckle, and shoulder scales (or epaulettes). His uniform is hand-colored with red piping to correctly show his position as a member of an artillery unit. His shoulder scales, buttons, and the crossed cannons on his kepi are highlighted in gold. On the reverse of this framed 1/6th ambrotype is a blue card with the studio information (\"FROM M.S. LAMPREY\'S Daguerreian Saloon, Elm Street, OPPOSITE CITY HOTEL, MANCHESTER, N.H.\") along with the pencil note \"my uncle Fred Worthen.\" This 1/6th plate ambrotype (2 11/16\" x 3 3/16\") is in a metal mat with an oval opening (measuring 2\" x 2 3/8\"), decorated around the edges with a floral pattern. The mat and ambrotype are in very good antique condition, with almost no blemishes in the emulsion! It is unusually crisp. It appears this photo was taken as Fred Worthen was preparing to head off to war. Frederick S. Worthen was born in Candia, New Hampshire, on December 21, 1824 to Lewis Worthen and Hannah Buswell. He married Martha E. Merrill of Lancaster, NH, on April 7, 1846, and the couple eventually had two children, Charles (born 1851) and Eldora (Dora, born c.1855). At the age of thirty-six Frederick enlisted in Manchester on September 26, 1861 as a private in the First New Hampshire Battery, Volunteer Light Artillery. According to an 1890 federal census of Union veterans (see photos), he was discharged on September 26, 1864 with the rank of private from the \"1st NH Batt.\" Between 1861 and 1864 the unit saw extensive action at Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg (where a monument stands in the National Cemetery to the First New Hampshire Battery Light Artillery), Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and the Seige of Petersburg, among other battles (for full service history see or dunhamwilcox.net/nh/nh_lgt_bat.htm). Worthen returned to Manchester in 1864; the 1870 federal census records him living with his wife and two children, along with Frederick\'s 83-year-old father, Lewis. Frederick worked as a cooper, with his father assisting him in the shop. Martha died on January 17, 1894 at the age of 69. The 1900 census finds Frederick living at 112 Milford Street in Manchester with his son Charles, daughter-in-law Eveline, and grandson Elgin. Frederick died on March 11, 1905 at the age of eighty, with his death certificate noting that he died in a Manchester railroad yard of a fractured skull. Was he hit by a train? Did he fall off a platform? We\'re not sure, but what we do know is that this ambrotype was found in a box in the rafters of a house in Easton, Massachusetts, along with a more than a dozen ambrotypes, tintypes, daguerreotypes and papers from the Smith family of Goffstown, New Hampshire (which we\'ll eventually be listing in the future -- contact us if interested). Presumably there is a connection, as Frederick Worthen\'s son, Charles, died in Goffstown, in 1912. Note in the photos that the two sheets of glass are held together with a wax-paper type wrapping that appears somewhat contemporary to when the ambrotype was made (but still quite old). It is NOT masking tape or any sort of modern adhesive. And given the fading around the edges of the blue backing card, it appears that this frame had remained closed sincemanufacture, until we carefully opened it for cleaning and photography this week.As we are now amid the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, mementos such as this poignant portrait take on greater resonance as we\'re reminded of the sacrifice of millions of Americans, from soldiers to the president. We are starting this listing at $9.99 with , so here\'s your chance to acquire this rare piece of Civil War history at the price that you set! Good luck offerding!
