Wonderful bookends depicting a kneeling man in classical garb, absorbed in his lyre. I especially like the details of the setting: outdoors with trees nearby, and a stream that starts in the foreground (represented by the blue paint on the top of the base) and running to the open sea in the background. All presented in lovely color.
Bronze-clad (electro-formed) by Pompeian Bronze of NYC, their logo formed into the side of the base. Circa 1921. Pompeian\'s own title for this set was \"Music\" and I have seen variations in the design: one with the word Music formed into the backs; another with the word Music formed into the front of the base.
Condition is excellent: no breaks in the cladding, no mashed corners, just minor dings and scuffs. On one piece, the decorative upright tends to lean back a bit, but as my photo with the books shows, not noticeable when put to their intended use. Paint all is original and almost entirely intact, and still bright and eye-catching. Felts on the bottoms probably not original. Both pieces sit flat and stable.
7 1/8 inches tall; 4 3/4 inches wide; 2 3/4 inches deep. And pretty heavy at 2 1/4 pounds EACH PIECE.
