Child\'s Aesthetic Transferware Teaset Little Girl with Big Dog Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire, England c.1885 This is a striking child\'s transferware tea set with service for a tea party of six. It dates to c. 1885. This set has no chips or cracks a rare find! It has six cups and six plates, but only 5 saucers.
The set features a little girl, probably named May or Mae, standing with her arms around a huge dog, probably a Newfoundland or Retriever. She is wearing a big hat, and the dog seems to have a smile on its face. This endearing scene is framed by an aesthetic background of flowers, birds and lots of geometrical whimsies.
The pieces in the set are marked with pattern number 766 and registration number 69456. The set was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children\'s tea sets. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic.
