Up for offer is this rare lot of two (2) Dice marked GR with crown showing the Tax was paid on them in accordance with the 1765 Tax Stamp Act. The Crown and GR was King George III’s Stamp. Dice with this marking showed that the tax was paid on the dice. The cost of getting the dice stamped in 1765 was 10 shillings and in todays money would be $55.00 dollars. Dice each measure 5/8 inch square. Total Weight of both dice is 1.9 Grams. Guaranteed. See photos.

Dice were the only non-paper items listed under the 1765 Act and stamp impressions were made on the dice as proof that the Stamp Tax had been paid.

As the Stamp Tax applied to both playing cards and dice this was viewed as an indirect tax on gambling. The 1765 British Tax Stamp Act led to outrage, anger, resentment, protests, dissension and ultimately to the American Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. These are are truly an authentic and wonderful piece of our history since they directly led to our independence!
