This sale is for a Seven (7)piece Berry Bowl Set consisting of 1 Master Bowl and 6 Individual Bowls.

All of the pieces are marked ingreen “E. S. Germany” ~ “PROV SAXE”. What is a bit confusing is the marking. The “AX” is joined whichgives the appearance of “SXE”. Fortunately my reference shown below has thismark pictured and has the marking spelled out as “PROV SAXE”. This also begs the question, is it hand painted or a transfer?According to my reference, there is an identical version of this same backstampbut “Hand Painted” was added and was also used from 1902 forward, the same asthis backstamp.

These were represented to me asmanufactured in 1902 which that backstamp was indeed used beginning in 1902. Ihave located a very good website during the course of my own research. To besafe, I am dating these pieces between 1902 and 1937. I believe the “E.S.” stands for Erdmann Schlegelmilch, not to be confused with ReinholdSchlegelmilch (R.S. Prussia) who was in direct competitionwith the Erdmann Schlegelmilch factory.This information is courtesy of “PM&M ~ Porcelain Marks and More” websiteand I highly recommend it.

I purchased this set in April 2007from a lady in Bridgeport Connecticut who stated these were from the originalowner who lived on Park Avenue in New York. Her estate had been put up forsale. That is the only history I have on this gorgeous set and I paid dearlyfor it.

This set is in excellent ~ Immaculate conditionbeing free of chips, cracks, scratches,crazing, restorations and water sickness. There are a few rough areas onsome of the base rims, which is shelf wear and to be on the safe side, “fleabites”.There is 1 miniscule nick ~ flake approximately 3/16” on the inside of the baserim on one of the individual bowls. There are a few black dots mostly confinedto the base rims and are either paint drops or ash marks. One of the small bowlshas a fleck of raised porcelain on the base rim that apparently was left behindfrom the mold. There are also a few raised dimples. Most of these issues are ofcourse manufacturing. This is certainly not problematic, does not detractfrom this desirable set and I mention this for accuracy. I always tried to buythe very best and as a collector I tend to be more critical than most.

The measurements are as follows:

Master Bowl ~ 10 1/4\" in diameter x 2 1/2\" tall with a base rim being5 1/8” in diameter.

Individual Bowls ~ 5 3/8” in diameter x 1 1/4\" tall with base rims being 23/4\" in diameter.

The Master Bowl features 2 largevivid pink roses and the Individual Bowls have 1 rose. All have a soft pastelbackground of blue, green and green graduating to yellow. They have scallopedrims which are trimmed in gold. The gold application is intact with no loss. Allhave a bright white glossy finish on the undersides. The Master Bowl has 6 evenlyspaced pierced holes around the outer rim with absolutely no damage. The moldhas raised areas throughout, reminding me of the R.S. Prussia molds. It iscertainly a beautiful set, one I could not resist. Sadly I have had this storedin a cabinet since purchasing it, having run out of room to display.

I live in a rural area in the mountains of Western NorthCarolina. There is a 1 day delay on all shipping types USPS offers. Yourpackage goes from my local post office to Asheville and then to Charlotte whichaccounts for that extra day. The clock doesn’t start ticking until it reachesCharlotte. I cannot offer overnight express shipping. Much to my surprise, thelocal post office charges the overnight rate but the parcel actually doesn’tarrive for 2 days. If you need overnight service, UPS is an alternative I cancheck on for you. Priority mail is supposed to be 2 – 3 business days, addanother day as described above.

The local post office closes extra days when a holiday isinvolved. If a holiday is on Monday, the post office closes both Friday andSaturday – same with Thanksgiving. I do get mail delivery which is how they getaway with closing the postal location. I have to go down the mountain to my boxfor the mail and they do not pick up parcels.
