Beautiful antique golden solid quartersawn oak document box. Made by the Weis Manufacturing Company of Monroe, Michigan in the early 1900s. The Weis label is intact. This unusually large box measures 5 5/8\" wide x 8 1/4\" deep x 9 3/8\" tall. Inside dimensions are 5 1/8\" wide x 7 3/4\" deep x 8 3/4\" tall. The box is constructed of 1/4\" thick oak and uses fingerjoints for strength. Brass colored metal hinges are in good working order. Lid is held open with a metal lid support — nice detail. Rubber feet on bottom to prevent marring furniture. Box was refinished with several coats of MinWax Satin Varnish and polished with 0000 steel wool and paste-wax to a soft lustre. Lever on metal divider is missing, otherwise in excellent condition. All joints are solid. No cracks, scratches or splits in the wood. !The Weis Binder Company was launched in the 1800s in Toledo, Ohio by the Weis brothers. Later it became known as the Weis Manufacturing Company and re-located to Monroe, Michigan. A factory complex was constructed between 1905-1912 in Monroe. When completed in 1912, the complex consisted of three main buildings for a total of 120,000 square feet and employed 300 people. From 1912-1963, the company produced office furniture, accessories and equipment. In 1963 the company was acquired by the Globe-Wernicke Company and from that point on their products were sold under the Globe-Weis name.This piece is a must-have for anyone who collects Weis bookcases and office furniture.
