Here is your chance to collect aremarkable piece of history by a potterwhose works are found in theSmithsonian (National Museum ofAmerican History) and the MarylandHistorical Society, as well as privatecollections across the country.Extraordinary for its size, this lovelychamber pot or slop jar also has gold gild accents, beautifully painted floral designs onboth sides and intricately designedhandles. Without its lid, the chamberpot is 9 ¾\" tall and has adiameter at the rim of 10\". With thelid, it is 12 ¼\" tall. Itmeasures 13\" handle to handle. The hand-painted design has sprigs offoliage and bluebells. The chamber potcarries the mark of the Edwin BennettPottery Company (Baltimore, Md). Themark is an illustration of the worldwith a sword piercing it diagonally, used 1890-1897. It has the Latin motto\"Bona Fama Est Melior Zona Aurea\". Arough translation is \"A good reputationis better than gold.\" The handles havea fluted swirl design with goldaccents, and the lid has a prettyembossed scallop design. Gold accentsare also found along the bottom of theembossed area near the top rim. The gold is in very good to excellentcondition, particularly near the rim. There is some wear to the gold on thehandles. Both the chamber pot and itslid have fine all-over crazing, withthe lid\'s crazing somewhat morepronounced. On the inside at the pointof the bottom attachment of one of thehandles, there is a small stress crackthat does not go through. There is asmall chip and a small crack on theunderside of the lid (see photos). Ibelieve there may have been gold aroundthe rim on the top; if so, it is wornaway. [1111322P02]
