Always highly sought-after due to their highly decorative appearance, these boxes were made in the Vizagapatam region of British India for the English market around 1860.
Made in Rectangular form with large panels of antique \'Faux\' Tortoiseshell to the beautifully domed top, quite wonderful contrasted against the \'Ox Bone\' straps, maintained with white metal studs, panels with openwork floral decoration and arabesques.
The superb craftsmanship can be seen with the intricate fretwork lace panels around the sides of the box, these are clearly where damage can occur over the last 150 years, there are (miraculously) no losses.
The box carcase is made from Sandalwood which can be seen from the inside, again no damage
The box stands on four wonderful carved Lion\'s paw feet. With lock, key lacking
In excellent condition with minimum usage marks and as previously stated no losses or defects
