This is a charming, 18th century folding knife, with an eating utensil attached to the back. The Navaja-knife is 7” (17.90cm) when fully opened with a full, robust 3” blade. The body of the knife is wonderfully carved from domesticated bull horn. There is a finely made slot on the back of the knife body that holsters a delicately forged eating fork. This type of knife was carried by people of wealth. It was used for eating preserved meats or plates of steaming scrapple when picnicking en plein air. The origin of this style of knife is Italy and would be called a “Calabresi”. The bolster at one end of the knife is shaped in the form of a boot which is indicative of Italy. This style of bolster was also used as a Tobacco pipe tamper for enjoying a smoke after a plate of sweet meats and a glass of Madeira. The Navaja is in fine condition with the tiniest of hairline cracks on one edge of the domestic bull horn body. Rarely found, this is an item type I have seen only three times in the last twenty years.
