This is a antique folk art carved Black Americana carved folk art head cane.The handle of the cane is a carved black mans head done with nice detail.The man has a high collar shirt on and its looks to be a bow tie.The cane is carved from one piece of wood and the age and patina to the head and the shaft is wonderful.There is very nice detail to the carving with the approiate wear one would expect from something that was used.This cane was used.There is no ferrule and never was one and there is wear towards the bottom of the cane as to be expected.There is a crack of about 1\"on the base of the stick from use and very tight age drying lines on the shaft.Absolutely nothing that detracts.The age and patina and color is fantastic.This is a great piece of Black Americana and would be a nice addition to a folk art collection of similar items.

The cane is 35 1/4\" tall, 3\"across the top of the handle.I am going to guesstimate that this cane was made in the late 1800\'s.Nice old cane and in very nice condition.Best color and patina to the wood from years of use and just being here.Not sure of type of wood used but is fantastic and is a hard wood..very tight grain wood.Best of the best.Please look at all the pictures for canes of this nature and quality do not come up that often.

Many folks ask me if antique canes are OK to use.I do not believe that a antique cane should be used for support.When these were made it was more as a fashion statement and not a means of support.Everybody carried a cane in the days of old.Today,we have a obesity problem in this country,that was not the case back in the days of canes and walking sticks.They were treated as a rule the same way a Gucci bag is today..as a statement as to fashion.Please do not use a antique cane for a means of support.It may break.As a rule a Tiffany vase of old is not used for flowers today,but put in a case and admired for the artwork that it is.The antique cane should be treated in the same manner.
