This hand carved wooden plaque uses the form of carving known as relief carving. Relief carving is a sculptural form in which figures are carved in a flat panel of wood. The figures project only slightly from the background rather than standing freely. This relief carving depicts a scribe. A scribe is a person who writes books or documents by hand as a profession. This profession lost most of its importance and status with the advent of printing. Its beautiful wood work has been kept to its best with years of waxing, the age old European care method for pieces of wood furniture. The plaque measures approximately 13.5 inches Tall x 14.5 inches Wide x 2 inches Deep and weighs 4.5 pounds.
