18th Century French Napoleonic Prisoner of War Straw Work Case Etui Circa 1800

This is a scarce example of aGeorgian period cheroot or cigar case. Dating from the George III period madeby a French prisoner whilst he was being held captive in an English prisondepot around the 1789 to 1815period.

Please see a similar example to this case on page73 of The Arts and Crafts of Napoleonic and American Prisoner of War 1756-1816by Clive Lloyd.

Measuring 11 cm by 7.5 cm by approx 4.5 cm.

This two piece, friction closing case is hand madefrom a striped mosaic of individual straw pieces. The straw was split with aspecial wooden straw splitter tool and then stained in these attractive shadesof purple and green. Please see the lining where purple and cerise pink dyedstraw has been used to a most wonderful effect.

Condition - The outside straw work is in very goodcondition, but not perfect as one would expect after 200 years. There is amissing triangle of plain straw within the lozenge shape decoration on one ofthe domed ends, also two strips of purple straw missing on the outer lozenge. Tothe other domed end there is a tiny 0.5 cm of straw missing. A strip of purplestraw edge decoration missing to the center of the shorter pull off lid. Pullopen the snugly fitted base and you can see that there is damage to the actualstraw covered card. There is an old collectors label to the interior with anumber 15.
