Signed by artist, \"Christen\", hand painted on silk panel face screen pair (2) with gold finished wood handles. Napoleon III era, Victorian era, c.1840-70 (French)This is a stunning old matched pair of French face screens, each hand painted with great talent on fine old silk. These face screens were very popular in the Victorian era, particularly, where they must have been in every well-appointed home in numbers, pairs always, and were there to give to visitors to hold against the blushing heat of the fireplace as they sat and visited or listened to music or similar. Usually seated closer to the warmth, ladies had to protect their pale cheeks from the blush of a direct fireplace. We find them in all types of women\'s arts such as painted, needlepoint, embroidery and also production ones in materials such as papier mache or even hand painted wood. I\'m particularly drawn to the charm of their history, and I try to buy the finest ones we see. Right now we have a nice selection.
Very good condition for age and type. The screens remain in very good condition, with one having a bit of loss to the gold-painted wood handle and the other having a very tiny push tear in silk down near handle mount (approximately .16\" and tight edges, could be mended with a backing a tiny dot of fabric adhesive). The handles do not match, but might still both be original. Or one might be a replacement from another period face screen. Photos show them well. Both have their tiny bolts and wing nut hardware intact. No real damage to note and the silk is very tightly stretched on the frames. Measurements noted on photos.Our photos are large and clear. Our shipping days are Tuesday and Friday, paid items will be shipped on the first shipping day after payment is received (except when special circumstances exist). We prefer to use USPS whenever possible, and require all packages to be insured. If you prefer another method of shipment, please mention it. We charge only actual expense of shipment/insurance, except in the case of larger items which must have special wood crates built. Wood crate charge, when applicable, is a flat $35.00 in addition to actual postage & insurance charges.
