ANTIQUE GEORGIAN 1827 LADIES SILVER VINAIGRETTE

This is a delightful Georgian ladies purse vinaigrette dating to 1827.

The vinaigrette was used by both men and women during the Georgian period, and was carried in a pocket or hung from a chatelaine at the waist, to mask unsavoury odours. This one is small and delicate, and has no ring to hang on a chain so was carried in a ladies purse ready to be used.

This super vinaigrette is made in Silver, rectangular in shape with a bright cut ornate front and back, with a blank cartouche on one side. There is full hallmark, date letter for Birmingham 1827, plus the Lion Passant and George IV\'s head, and the makers mark \'ES\', inside both the lid and the base. The interior still has its gold wash finish which was used to prevent discoloration.

The vinaigrette is side hinged and opens to reveal a pretty, ornate, pierced grill, which is also hallmarked with the Lion Passant. The grill is hinged to allow a piece of sponge or wadding soaked with an aromatic liquid or perfume to be placed inside.

This lovely vinaigrette is in very good condition with all surfaces intact, with just one very shallow dint to the back, this is not enough to detract. The two hinges are in fine working order.

A beautiful small antique piece for the vinaigrette collectors, or general collectors of Georgian social items.
