a really nice antique Georgian silver snuff box... which is the DOUBLE type.. the lid has another hinge and its got two compartments... has been engraved all over the body and you will see the original CURVED back has a crease in the centre.. where someone has bent it.. which is a great pity... but these type usually sell for £650+ when not damaged.. so this box will do as a gap filler till you are able to afford a better one. Here is a RARE type of Georgian silver snuff box..its the curved back type... rectangular with rounded ends and it wobbles about like a pebble .....it has been fine engraved all over in a FLORAL sort of pattern... the design is very fine dots punched... to create the larger plain spaces....with double LEAF like design at the rounded sides.. and the same squiggly design on the top as on the bottom.
Whilst looking at the bottom you will see its got a CREASE mark.... this should NOT be here....it does not go right across but it has made a very small pin prick hole in the bottom.. I can just see light thru it now.
So to the top again.... you will see its got a VACANT carouche in the centre.. and it has two thumb lifts on the lid... the larger one open the box ..the hinge is flat inset and very well made .. so looking in the box now see its gilt and under the lid.. hallmakrs in here Birmingham 1809 with makers initials SP right in the centre of the crease.
When you have hold of this lid.. you MAY see its of a thicker metal than normal... some people do NOT notice its different. !
So close the lid now.. and feel for the other small stuck up part at the other end of the lid.. this lifts up as well... again its a good flush inset hinge ...this is gilt inside as well... beautiful condition in here... with hallmarks again....Birmingham 1809 ....SP of Samuel Pemberton with King George\'s Head bust as well.
The snuff box has obviously been used but the gildinginside is very good.. the top main lid is a little gapey at the thumb catch end at one side....other than that and the crease on the base beingthe only issues of the box.
A gap filler till you get a better example.
It is 2 and 3/4 inch long x 1 and a 1/4 inch wide x 1/2 inch deep....it weighs approx......42grams.
