Here we have a superb blown glass centrepiece, footed fruit bowl or comport dating from around 1830 -1850. This handsome, large piece is made of clear glass and has the distinctive slightly grey colour of glass dating from the early - mid 19th century. It has been hand blown and has a ground off pontil on the base.It has clearly had a lot of use as there are lots of old scratches to the surface which would suggest that a spoon has been used repeatedly to scoop out the contents. Maybe it was used for serving ice cream or prepared fruit, for example. These scratches could be polished out if desired, but I think that they form part of the character and history of the item.There is also lots of wear to the base, so this has been a well used piece. The comport stands 6 3/4 inches high and has a diameter at the rim of 10 inches. It weighs a hefty 1.4kg so a heavy and substantial piece. It makes a lovely ring when tapped with the finger.

This is a superb item to add to any collection of antique glassware and a great piece for display
