Antique German Wooden Arm Chairs (Matched Pair) ca. 1850-1870:
$4.25

Pair of antique Biedermeier Directoire-style oak wooden armchairs finished in faux leather and with curved arms and studded trim on thesplats. Design has its origins in 1780-1800 and the chairs appear to haveDirectoire influence in the arms, legs, splat and overall appearance.Directoire was a transitional style that is between Louis XIV and Empire, characterized by a lighter but sturdy appearance. I cannot ascertain when thesechairs were made but believe it is mid-19th century. I purchasedthem in Germany in the early 1970’s; they were in very rough condition; thefinish was worn off and the leather was dry-rotted and torn. They were restoredin 1979 by Edwin C. Ahlberg, a four-generation family-owned dealer and restorerof fine antiques in Connecticut. The chairs stand on tapered square front legsthat have routed design on their fronts, there are no stretchers to connect thelegs. The rear legs are square and curve into the upright stiles, which is aDirectoire design element. The slip seat cushions are removed easily. No cornerbrackets are under the seats. The stiles share the same routing as the legs andrise to meet the great rail with a simple tri-swirl floral design. The faux-leatherand brass-trimmed splats are integrated with the great rails and shoes. Thearms end with scroll fronts. The chairs show some wear and blemishes consistentwith age and use but are in excellent condition. They do not wobble. One seatback was glued near the top. Dimensions are as follows:

Height of Seat Back: 46.375” or 118cm

Width Overall: 24.75” or 63cm

Depth Overall: 22” or 56cm

Seat Height: 19.25” or 49cm

Arm Height: 28.5” or 72.5cm

Additional pictures will be sent upon request.

Note: Local/regional pickup and delivery. Due to age, shipping these chairs would require professional packing which is cost prohibitive. I will meet purchaser halfway if she/he is from the six New England states, NY, NJ or PA. They must include a mileage payment using the IRS 2015 business rate of 57.5 cents per mile paid at time of purchase payment.
