This most unusual architectural element of the early to middle 1800s is hand carved from rich, dark brown mahogany and shows handsawn marks on the reverse. It is most likely European in origin and measures 18” tall x 30” wide x 6” deep and appears to have comprised the face of a corner shelf/bracket that supported a carved statue. Its center features a 10 3/8” diameter roundel with 6 1/8” inner diameter and a depth varying from 2 ½”-3 ½” deep. I conjecture this area held a relic of the saint whose figure was displayed on top and the varying depth of the hole suggests a downward angle that allowed the object displayed to be more easily viewed from below. In any event, the surface is beautifully carved by a master craftsman and the surface retains the original rich French Polish surface. It is grimy with no bad losses…just some trimming and drilled holes on the bottom tip where its was incorporated into other woodwork elements.WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO SHIP WORLDWIDE IF ALLOWED BY USPS.
