Antique UK Hallmarked 1807 Fusee Sterling Silver Pocket Watch - RUNNING:
$300.00

Early 1800\'s British sterling silver pocket watch with a fusee movement.
  • I\'m not an expert on watches so I do not know if this is a verge or lever fusee. Fusee chain is attached and when wound (only a few turns), watch ran for several hours but I cannot guarantee that it will be when it arrives or thereafter. I did not originally have the key for this watch but have found a key that does work and it will be included. There is another stem on the movement and I\'m not sure what that does. It appears to be a different size but the same key seems to also fit it.
  • The crystal is missing on this watch.
  • The case is hallmarked with the makers initials: which are TE over HF. I have not found a case maker/watch maker with either of those sets of initials. There is the lion passant hallmark indicating that case is sterling silver. The hallmark to the left is not distinct but it does not appear to be the outline of the leopard without a crown so I think it is the London assay mark that is prior to 1822. The date letter on the bottom is also not clear but seems to be a capital \"M\". That could be 1807 and fits with the apparent movement maker\'s working time frame. There is a 4th hallmark that could be the duty stamp (on the right) but it is so blurred that I cannot match it to any I have found. The same hallmarks are on the inside of the back case which opens at number VI on the dial and on the inside of the cuvette which does not open.
  • The front bezel opens with a hinge located at numeral IX on the dial.
  • The enamel dial has couple of hairline cracks starting at numeral V.
  • The hands seem to move fine.
  • You get to the lovely fusee movement by opening the front bezel and then there is a small release lever in a notch under the dial at number VI that drops the movement out by a hinge at numeral XII.
  • The name on the movement plate is Evans and I am not sure of the first name letter after that. I think it is an \"R\" and then the numbers \"297\". Could possibly be another number in front of those? The town underneath the name is \"Shrewsbury\" (England). There was a Richard Evans in Shrewsbury, clockmaker/watchmaker maker\'s mark registered in 1774 and he died in 1855. He also had a wife, Mary who was a watchmaker/clockmaker and a son, William who was working in 1831. So each of them could be the maker as I am not certain of the maker\'s first initial you see in the photo. There appears to be a diamond-like stone set in the center of the ornately pierced balance cock?
  • Not sure if the top loop is silver.
  • Size of movement diameter is 34 mm which is between a 5 and 6 on the Lancashire Gauge.
  • Outside diameter of case is 47 mm.
  • Depth of case is 16.5 mm.
  • Weight is 90 grams.
  • As I said, I am not a watch expert. I am amazed this watch runs and again: watch ran for several hours but I cannot guarantee that it will be when it arrives or thereafter. I can tell that it needs to be cleaned. Case closes well but opens easily. It is fascinating to watch this fusee mechanism work after all this time.
