An utterly extraordinary and totally charming embroidered patchwork style bedspreadI could hazard a guess and suggest that this dates from the early 1900s, English in origin and featuring a beautiful display of typical country garden flowers with a few exotics for good measureAll carefully and neatly stitched on a pleasing green cotton ground, there is no evidence of any template, and the work is clearly a labour of love by a skillful needlewomanPatched around a central huge and magnificent bouquet of bright silk threads, the smaller flower portraits are bound together with hand worked broad bands of ecru crochet cotton lace bandsBy no means a complete list, I spotted convolulous, rose, chrysanthemum, honesty, larkspur, snowdrop, lily, fuchsia, fresia, another rose, anemone, nasturtium, gentian, another lily, cornflower, pansy, iris, viola, bird of paradise, orchid, thistle, narcissus and forget-me-knot, violet, tulip, butterfly, sweet peas, crocusIn the central bouquet we seedelphinium, cabbage roses, aquiligea, poppy, lilac, lilies and moreA veritable floral feast!!!
Of the pictures shown, the more vibrant green is the most true to the original and I have washed the bedspread several times and apart from several rust stains shown in the pictures, at the top right hand side on the hand crochet lace work, and one square depicting a rose, the embroidery is clean and freshThe fabric and lace are strong and you dont feel nervous handling the quilt, I draw your attention to the slight bagginess around the largest central motif which does not in anyway detract from the amazing and absolutely unique beauty of the handwork
Shown on a double bed the quilt measures 73 x 79\" (186 x 201cm) 6\'1\" x 6\'7\"A real work of art
A plump and delicious heavy weight Durham QuiltAntique in date, this must have been hand worked on a frame in the North of England one hundred years agoand judging by the quality and density of the cotton wadding, the quilt hasn\'t been washed and wornIt is still squidgy and if you inspect on the pink reverse of the fabric, the fabric is still crinkled by the wadding inside, especially at the central petaled floral motifA Victorian ditsy block print cotton fabric, sprigged with scatter pattern of Spring posies of crocus interspersed by a painterly black line and yellow toneThe overall impression is fresh with the blues and pinks dominatingAs you would expect to see, the quilt has the characteristic Northern repeating daisy border with tight scrolling lines emanating from the central diamond petaled quilted designRunning over three widths of fabric with bound under outside edges, this is a fabulous example of this folk art and is an heirloom linen with years of wear and washing left in itNo wear, no damage, clean, this is a super antique quilt for your linen chest
Shown on a double bed, the quilt measures 70 x 80\" (178 x 203cm) 5\'10\" x 6\'8\"Hangs over the bed on each side, on a single bed it would hang to the floor
