Description Antique Hand-Painted Greek or Russian Orthodox Byzantine Icon of the Crucifixtion, Mary and Baby Jesus Darkened over time and having a very textured, distressed surface, this icon could really benefit from some restoration. There is a lot going on but it is hard to see all the details because the thick varnish has so darkened the surface. The main theme is the Crucifixion with a large cross bearing the body of Christ flanked by Mary holding a baby Jesus and on the other side, a holy patriarch...perhaps St Peter(I am no expert, so this is mere conjecture). There are a number of other figures, but it is too hard to identify them as you can just barely see their faces. Found at a recent estate sale, the icon was hand-painted in Russia (or Greece?) using tempera paint. This icon has been painted on 3/4\'\' thick wood that measures 12-1/4\'\' x14-5/8\" and weighs 2 pounds 7 ounces. It can be placed on a stand or hung on the wall with the addition of a wire or a metal hanger mounted on the reverse side. This wonderful antique icon has an abundance of aged patina with overall darkening and surface / edge wear as previously mentioned. The board has taken a curve as pictured and the two cross pieces of wood that would have fitted in the back side have been removed.Thanks for looking. Please email me if you have any questions!
