This is an authentic 18th Century PeriodGame Hook Circa 1760\'s or earlier, not a later reproduction.
Superb hand wrought blacksmith madegame hook with 4 hanging hooks. Hooks of this small size would not have been used to hang meat, they were indeed used for game.
This is a beautifully made 18th century American Colonial Era cooking tool that shows overall heat pitting from years of being used at an open hearth. Still in excellent condition!
Afinely made loop top with a nicely \'folded over\' curled end. There is a closed hand hammered hanging ring within the loop and it shows wonderful wear from more than 200 years of use. The ring allowed the game hanging on the hooks to be suspended over the fire by a trammel.
A fabulous twist to the iron work at the middle of the shaft.
The four hooks below the twist are well shaped from this one single piece of iron. The blacksmith split the end of the rod and formed it into these four individual hooks. Each one hammered with four sides. There are two large hooks and two smaller hooks enabling a fair amount of game to be suspended over the fire at one time.
Fine 1700\'s era blacksmith made hearth utensil are much sought after, later 19th century hooks are usually found to be quite simple in shape by comparison.
The hooks extend out from the central shaft horizontally 3-3/4\" - 3-1/4\" - 2-1/4\" and 2\"
The height without the hanging ring is 7\" high - with the hanging ring fully extended 8-1/2\"
