From the mid 19thC. to ca.1900 this is a wonderful carved wood and Mother of Pearl Inlaid foldable Bible Stand or Rihal from Syria or Egypt 15 inches x 18 1/2 inches x 6 3/4 inches deep when open or 38cmx47cmx17cm when open. The wood has a lovely patina all over that comes with much use. Comes from a closed Irish Catholic institution. This is a lovely item. Very impressive in a study these were used to keep the holy book on a platform off the ground or table. From the Victorian era and very finely and intricately carved, with the legs in the form of arabesque minarets. This would have been made to no doubt to hold a Koran but has been used for many years to hold a bible in an Irish Convent.
