Meiji / Taisho Period (Late 1800s - Early 1900s)

Magnificent Japanese bronze Ikebana vase of the finest quality.Elegant form,with intricate hand engraved design featuring lifelike golden carp swimming amongst splashing waves. The carp are further gilded to enhance the superb artistry. Very tasteful in the traditional Japanese aesthetic.


The engraved design winds around the entire body of the vasein stunning fashion. The artist expressed great attention to detail in the scores of individual scales, expressive motion, andintricate shading. The waves are lively and beautifully rendered in the style of Hokusai\'s famous woodblock prints. All comes together in a work of great harmony. See photos for all of the splendid detail.


In Japanese, koi is a homophone for another word that means \"affection\" or \"love\"; koi are therefore symbols of love and friendship in Japan. The koi fish has a powerful and energetic life force, demonstrated by its ability to swim against currents and even travel upstream. Thus, they also represent strength, courage, and longevity.


The casting of the vase issuperb, with a solid yet graceful presence. Further, the surface displays a magnificent patina with subtle rich coloration. Measures approximately 9 7/8\" high and 12\" wide.In excellent antique condition with just minor wear and a couple of small indentations that do not detract from the overall magnificence of the vase.
