DETAILS OF ITEM

This piece measures 3.75 inches by about 2.5 inches. This is a rare antique wooden ID card from a Shinto Shrine of a girl with the birth date and her birth place. The inscription on the front of the piece reads \"Born in the region of Tajima, Asago of Tajima (present day Hyogo Prefecture of Japan), Kami-Ikuno Village. The Ujiko of Hachiman Shinto shrine of Kami-Ikuno Village, October 26th in 1870 (the third year of Meiji), Kou, as the 4th daughter of Hayaguza Shigeuemon.

The back of the piece reads \"Issued by Bungo Yamada, the Year of Mizunoe-no-Saru, the 5th year of Meiji, 1872.\" Though there is nothing specific, Bungo Yamada is probably a village priest who had issued the ID card for Kou when she was 2 years old.

The 3rd Year of the Meiji era showed various effort of the Japanese Meiji government to join the Western world after opening its door in 1868. Japan’s first shoe factory was built by Katsuzo Nishimura and begun producing shoes in March 15th in Tokyo.

In December 4th, the plan to build Tomioka Silk Mill in Tomioka of Gunma was announced and the mill begun its production in November of 1872.

Tomioka Silk Mill is Japan\'s oldest modern model silk reeling factory, established by the government to introduce modern machine silk reeling from France and spread its technology in Japan. The factory is now designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The 5th year of Meiji era had a little unusual calendar year. This year ended on December 2nd and the 6th Year of Meiji had started the next day. This is the last year when Japan had used the Lunar calendar and then switched to the Gregorian calendar. In the eyes of the Western Calendar, the 5th year of Meiji lasted from February 9th to December 31st of 1872.

Kou had now joined as an Ujiko of the shrine in 1872 at the celebration of her first visit to a Shinto shrine called the Omiya-mairi. Whenever a child is born, a local Shinto shrine adds the name of the child to a list that is kept at the shrine and declares the child as the official member of the shrine called the \"Ujiko.\" This act will symbolically notify the local guardian God or spirit and ask for the protection of the new member.

Incidentally, June 26th of 1872, Christmas was declared a federal holiday in the United States. Also, the American presidential election was held Nov. 5, 1872, in which Republican incumbent Ulysses S. Grant defeated Liberal Republican and Democratic candidate Horace Greeley and became the 18th president of the United States.

Kou had lived when Japan had changed from a feudal society to a modern nation. The condition of this piece is still very good.
