Length - 19.75” (50.5 - 10.25” (26 - 4.75” (12.5 cm)DESCRIPTION:Fine old Matty Island wooden ceremonial food or serving bowl, hand-carved and with old repairs and a nice patina.

Early to mid 20th century. Wuvulu (Matty) Island, Papua New Guinea.

Carved in the characteristic hourglass shape with thin inward curving sides, a shallow interior, and slightly curved bottom (rocks when tilted on the long axis). The surfaces show a fine aged and weathered dark brown (almost black) slightly glossy patina with a long encrusted repair to the underside, as well as a small plugged repair that goes from the underside to the interior. The carving marks can be seen overall.

One exterior corner has an old collection mark, on paper with a finish over it, that reads simply “C” underlined. I bought this piece from a dealer several years ago and it came from an estate collection in the New York - New Jersey area. No other provenance is available.AGE: Early to mid 20th century. Probably circa 1920’s - 30’s. CONDITION:

Good ethnographic condition, as shown in the photos and with the following noted: Varied dark, worn, patina, somewhat glossy on the edges and raised areas of the carving marks. Several repairs and very small losses (wear from use) to the corners. Wood showing through the patina on the interior bottom. Wear to exterior bottom.
