Mexican redware Pulque pitcher, late 19th - early 20th century. Probably from Puebla.
Pitcher depicts a woman, possibly indigenous in appearance, with ruffled sleeves and what appear to be large earrings or braids. She may be wearing Chine Poblana clothing.Heavy, 7.5 inches tall, 5.5 inches wide.Pitcher is slip decorated, and appears to have copper oxide and manganese, as well as some grey clay portions (spout, for example).Floral buttons on figure. Very attractive piece with crazing where the glaze is heavy enough. Please note the place where the applied arm detail split during firing. Completely solid, not a structural issue.Pulque is a favorite drink in Mexico, and historically these pitchers / jugs have been used by individuals to fill with the drink and use in the home or at gatherings.Ships insured and carefully packed.
