The hand painted flowers are sculpted in fine detail. This isan example of the highly decorated porcelainof this period andthisone is uniqueas itisin the form a mirror with the delicate petal flowers along the side .The entire mirror is encrusted with the tiny florals, leaves, and vines.
The mirrormarked on the bottom with thevery faded blue hatch mark thatlinks it to the Sitzendorf Company a rival to Meissen.

SIZE:APPROXIMATELY 16 INCHES TALL BY 8 INCHES WIDE-

.

The Mirror is marked on the bottomattributed to the Sitzendorf Company a rival to Meissen.

MAKER: Blue hatch mark- with incised numbers-This double crossed linesmark has been attributed to Sitzendorf of Thuringia -

Sitzendorf porcelain marks seem to appear in two main styles: a stylized \"S\" beneath a crown,(more recent pieces ) and a double slash - cross slash mark. This mirrorappears to beadouble hatch,an earlier mark

The Sitzendorf Porcelain factory. Asplendid 150 year oldcompany still trading, having survived being burned to the ground in the 19thCentury, they dodged the bombs of WW2 and the avoided the suffocation of theauthoritarian Soviet regime.
The Sitzendorf Porcelain factory was founded in Thuringia, Germany in 1760 and by 1809 employed around 300 workers. The factory has a long and varied history and has existed under the leadership of the well-known Voigt brothers until 1896. The factory produced beautiful high quality figures and decorative porcelain in the Meissen and Dresden style. It is still in existence today after many hardships and several restructures in the 20th century.

AGE: The double slash mark alone is one of the earliest marks dating back to when the Voigts were in charge of production. This type mark dates the piece to thelate 19th century with its profuse floral and vine encrustation. If you do a Google search for Sitzendorf Blue hatch you will see it dates the mark to circa 1890.

CONDITION:

The mirror is in good age related condition with minor chips present to some of the floral tips and age discoloration noticeable in the mirror.

The knicks from age to some of the leafage, beak, tail feather(see blue bird left top), and possibly a crown feather, very minor gilding loss are not major.

You can see from the photos that there are petals on flowers that are slightly chipped or there is the missing tip of bird tail feather but they do not detract from the overall piece and the way it is viewed. So look carefully at photos. I have discounted my price as to these minor blemishes- The mirror is such a busy piece that I think any flaws are basically camoflauged, but you be the judge,.

More on the history of Sitzendorf porcelain

In 1884 the Sitzendorf porcelain factory, under thechairmanship of Alfred and Carl Wilhelm Voigt, began the production of lace\"Dresden style\" figurines. In 1890 another branch of thefactory was opened in Unterweissbach, producing similar high-quality porcelainfigures and figural groups.Throughout these periods, there existed twoprincipal styles of marks.Despite continualeconomic hardship fueled by wars and world economic depressions, and thefailure of the Unterweissbach factory in 1928, the Sitzendorf porcelain factorycontinues to operate to this day.

From my father’s collection he collected in the yearsfrom 1920- 1971.many Meissen and Rosenthal figurinesThis beautiful hard to find bird figurine mirror is a unique treasure.
