This classicFrench needlecase is carved of motherof pearl with an embossed gilded metal band at the opening.Itmeasures 3 1/8\"longand has a crack at the lower edge of the top on one side. Thecondition is otherwise excellent with no other damage and themother of pearl is veryluminous.

It was once part of a Palais Royalset of sewingtools. Some like this are shown on p. 65 ofGay Ann Rogers\' book AnIllustrated History ofNeedlework Tools.

ThePalais Royal was an arcade of shops within a wing of a former royalpalace in Paris. The shops opened in the late 1780s and housed thefinest French artisans selling only the highest quality goods. Items ofmother of pearl and precious metals were specialties there.
