Native American Buffalo Horn Quirt, Riding Crop or WhipThe whole whip is made of dark horn.The handle is naively carved in the shape of a buffalo or bison - there is a hole through its head which I suspect once carried horns.There is a hairline crack in the back of the handle, old binding has stopped this from spreading.The shaft is long and tapering.At the end of the shaft there is a flattened and slightly curved piece of horn, old binding covers the place where this joins the shaft. I bought it from a Scottish antique dealer, presumably it belonged to an intrepid Scot who had travelled to America.

The whole whip is made of dark horn.

There is a hairline crack in the back of the handle, old binding has stopped this from spreading.
The shaft is long and tapering.

At the end of the shaft there is a flattened and slightly curved piece of horn, old binding covers the place where theis joins the shaft, so it is difficult to say whether it is the same piece of horn. There is a split in the horn just below the binding, the horn here can move a little - this would make the whip unsuitable for use.

This is a very unusual piece - there is a similar example without the carved handle in Brooklyn Museum, it is said to come from the Cheyenne people
