A rare Large Church Icon of King David, (North) Russia, 17th century,

tempera on wooden board, size 74 x36 cm.

King David is one of the most important figures in Jewish history. Born in907 BCE, he reigns as king of Israel for 40 years, dying at age 70 in 837 BCE. Thereis so much that can be said about him. Some people like to focus on the warrioraspect ― the chivalrous warrior fighting for God ― but when his persona andaccomplishments are considered as a whole, it is his spiritual greatness thatshines most of all. Thesaint depicted full-length as an Old Testament prophet wearing a jewelled crownand holding an open scroll in his left hand inscribed with one of hisprophecies, making a sign of blessing with his right hand.
