This is a very old hand made paisley or Kasmir shawl. I believe it is one of those woven or stitched in India.

It is one of those rare shawls which were entirely handwoven. All the ones you see on , and there are a lot of them,are machine woven, or what is called power loomed, or jacquard. If you look at the back of one of those, and look at the back of this, or even the front of this, some of you can perhaps see the differences.

It would have taken a couple of people a couple of months to make, working full time. It is one of the square ones with a small black center design. It is made of many handwoven pieces which were then pieced together. It has damage, wear, and obvious considerable age. I think it is Victorian, probably Early Victorian.
