Eugene Delatre (10 December 1864 Paris - 24 September 1938)Original etching and drypoint engravingSigned on the lower right and titled on the central lower(4,5 x 3,3 in)
Studied art techniques under John Lewis Brown and under his famous father : Auguste Delatre (1822-1907) had established himself as the most sought after printer of fine etchings during the latter nineteenth century. He printed the etched plates of such prominent artists as Meryon, Bracquemond, Whistler, Seymour Haden and many others.Continued this fine tradition into the twentieth century and printed the plates of Picasso and others.Passionate about engraving techniques, he laid the foundations of modern methods of color etchings drawn from his works to the watercolor. He first gained international recognition as a creative etcher during the mid 1890\'s when he contributed plates to such influential publications as \"L\'Estampe Originale\" (1894). Many of these early works were etchings printed in colors and in this decade Delatre, along with such etchers as Jean Francois Raffaelli and Manuel Robbe, led the way in the revival of the color etching. He exhibited in 1895 at the Galerie Latte, with 25 prints on display alongside works by Seurat, then in 1896 with Bing and in 1898 at the Durand-Ruel. From 1905, he participated in all exhibitions of the Gallery Georges Petit. He was a founding member of the Societe de la gravure en couleurs and a full, exhibiting member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.He introduced the art of engraving to many artists including Renoir, Lautrec, Mary Cassatt, Steinlen, Stew. He also worked with Picasso (The Frugal Meal, 1904), and in 1911 the four etchings byPicasso that illustrate the first Cubist book Saint Matorel by Max Jacob. He collected objects and Japanese prints.A collection of his prints is on display at the Museum of Art and History of Saint-Denis.Was to become one of the most skilled colour printmakers of his generation. His first colour-printed etchings and engravings date from 1890-91. Although influenced to some degree by the prevailing taste for Japonism, Eugene Delatre preferred the method of inking à la poupée, using only one printing of a single plate, to the Japanese method of multiple block printing. As an early member of the Société de la Gravure Originale en Couleurs and later as a major publisher of original prints (after inheriting his father’s business in 1907), Eugène Delâtre exerted a considerable influence upon the development of original printmaking in France, even introducing Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and Mary Cassat to the art of burin engraving.
