Offering an antique 19th century Orthodox Christian icon from Poland. This is the Black Madonna of Częstochowa, also known as Our Lady of Częstochowa.
The 14\" X 9.5\" wood plaque is covered with bits of decorative carving in both wood and gesso and small pieces of glass and scattered glitter. The face of the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus appear to be painted on to the wood itself.
The back of the icon plaque is a beveled piece of solid wood, braced with cross bars at each end to prevent warping I suppose.
This antique icon is not in perfect shape and in fact has bits of gesso and wood decoration chipped off, some tiny glass studs missing and perhaps a loss of glitter here and there. All in all it is still a powerful piece of work that draws the eye and gives a feeling of peace. This was in my great aunt\'s private chapel for many years.
