This ornately hand carved painted pair of Javanese puppet dolls or Wayang golek are probably from the early to mid 20th century. The two dolls likely represent the God and Goddess of love Kamajaya and Kamarath. The male is slightly larger at 26-1/2\" tall including the skirt which covers the square black stand when assembled. The condition is relatively good for the age with some wear to the paint, small cracks in the wood (as wood is prone to do with shrinkage due to age), and two small tears in the skirt of one as see in the last photo. Here is the Wikipedia entry:
Wayang(KramaJavanese:Ringgit) is aJavaneseword for particular kinds oftheatre. The term \'wayang\' is theJavanese wordforshadow,[2]orbayangin standard Indonesian . In modern daily Javanese and Indonesian vocabulary, wayangis most often associated with the puppet itself or the whole puppet theatre performance. When the term is used to refer to kinds of puppet theatre, sometimes the puppet itself is referred to aswayang.Wayang golek are wooden doll puppets that are operated from below by rods connected to the hands and a central control rod that runs through the body to the head. The simple construction of the puppets belies their versatility, expressiveness and aptitude for imitating human dance.
