Oldest offifteenchildrenin a prosperous middle class family.Educatedby his uncle, aparishpriest. Following his uncle’sdeath, he tried to join theTrappists,Carthusians, andCistercians, but was rejected by them all. He spent years wanderingEurope, especiallyRome,Italy, in completepoverty, spending his days in perpetual adoration in thecathedrals. Given to religiousecstacieswhen contemplating thecrown of thorns; reputed to float, soar, andbilocatewhen in these swoons. Hebeggedin the streets, and if he was given more than he needed for the day, he would give the remainder to some one he considered more inneedthan he was. Benedicthealedsome of his fellowhomeless, and was reported to have multipliedbreadfor them. Noted counselor to people of all walks inRome. Hediedin a hospice, exhausted from his life ofausterity. His biography,writtenby hisconfessorMarconi, describes 136miraculouscuresattributed to him within three months of hisdeath.
