- Early Antique Wool on Linen Embroidery Stumpwork Scene of Ancient English Church Ruins Graveyard -
TheEmbroidery - Unusual large Rare Antique Early Embroidery Stumpwork Folk Art Scene 18th or 19th c Wool on Linen of an Ancient English Stone Church Graveyard - From our own collection, found in Lancaster, PA and archivally framed. I\'ve tried to trace the church pictured, and believe it could possibly be an \"artistic liberties\" depiction of the graveyard and ruins of St Thomas a Becket Church in Heptonstall England, or another St Thomas a Becket English Church, which all seem to have a similar tower and cemetery look. This embroidery was done in the 18th or 19th century, and the 12th c Heptonstall church would have already been in ruins at that time. Though found in Pennsylvania, and could be a PA piece, the church architecture looks older thatn found here. The piece has a wonderful charmingly spooky abandoned look, and could have been a mourning piece, or done by someone interested in the ruins. Two figures are shown in the lower right corner. Please see the photo of the similar ruins churchyard we found. The condition is as shown with some wear, and age discoloration. Wool yarn, with possibly silk and wool thread detail on linen.
