Antique Framed Under Glass Crossley Mosaic
Produced as pictures, rugs and table carpets for only for ashort period between 1850 - 69. These worsted mosaics are rare. Produced as aby product of their famous carpet production in Halifax, England. Theseremarkable pictures were very often copies from famous paintings. They wereneither stitched nor woven. They were very cleverly constructed from a painstaking process of constructing the intricate image in twelve foot lengths ofworsted threads. The design was held in place with straight metal rods andwithin a timber box framework. When tied, straightened and finished the lengthswould be divided into four sections. Each section’s warp end would display theimage in thick pile. Each new section was then placed in a new timber box framewith a loose bottom. The image would then be pushed up from the base; a linenglued mat would be fixed to the top threads. When dry, a 4 mm thick plate wouldbe guillotined across and hey presto your Mosaic wool pile picture has beencreated....ingenious?
