Antique Renaissance Ring Carved Hardstone Cameo Monsters 18k Gold French (#6084):

Antique Renaissance or earlier ring. 18k gold and carved cameo. Cameo dates to 16th-17th century. Shank is later. French hallmark.

Measurements: On measuring cone, the ring is a US 6.75 however, it will fit a larger finger (and can esilly be resized either way). The bezel with the cameo is approximately 5/8 inch (15mm) in length. Weighs 3.1 grams.

Oval cameo mounted in gold which is pulled up around the stone and pinched into place. The back is enclosed in gold. The cameo is made of a pale stone (probably agate) carved to near transparency with a white layer carved to depict two winged monsters, probably gryphons who had eagle heads, wings and lion\'s bodies. We have consulted with a number of cameo specialists, who came to the conclusion that the cameo dates to the 16th or 17th century. Delicate quality and fine detail of the carving.

The shank of the ring is most likely a later replacement. The shoulders of the ring consist of a central row of gradated gold globes with branches of gold diverting on either side of them from the shank to the bezel, forming a v around the center. The decorative design goes well around the finger. The rest of the shank is a simple gold band.

Marks: French gold hallmark could be added later than the ring, is somewhat faded (please see pictures). We acid tested the gold to ensure metal purity.

Condition: good with minor wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged \'photos and do not hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
