Antique Roman Catholic crucifix made probably in mid- to late 1800s.Good used condition, could have been worn as a pectoral crucifix by a Catholic missionary or a newly baptized Catholic who received this crucifix from a Catholic mission in a foreign country. Castfrom a metal alloy that appears to be pewter or similar type of tin-brass copper alloy.
On the obverse, the Corpus of Christ is crucified on a Latin cross with the INRI nameplate above.The skull and crossbones below the Corpus refer to Golgotha (Calvary), the elevated site where Jesus was crucified, which the Bible says means \"the place of the skull\" in Hebrew. An ancient tradition of Catholic and Orthodox Churches held that it was also the burial place of Adam thus symbolizing the ultimate victory of Christ over sin and death.
On the reverse, there is a floral pattern of ornaments. The centerpiece is designed as a cruciform flower.
