This 15 inch doll has a 5\" tall rubber shoulder head (4\" across shoulders) with a leather and cloth body movable at shoulders and, to some extent, knees. Arms and knees have brown cloth replacement mends at shoulders and same brown fabric at knees. Sweet head with usual crazing though not deep and does not appear to have been retouched in any way. Lower shoulder plate has had problems and possibly retouched though I don\'t see repaint strokes. As I handled her, I realized that her lower shoulder plate is what I started to grab when lifting her - it is strong but I resisted that urge and can see why she came to grief there - her tiny little waist doesn\'t invite lifting. She has her original wooden arms w/ spatulate hands (thumbs gone) and wooden legs all with worn but original paint as well as original paper joining at arms. I have no doubt this is her original body. I believe she dates to the 1840s-50s as reflected in the same early hairstyles of papier mache and china head dolls. Dress is wonderful and in exceptional condition - completely hand sewn with careful linings of bodice and deep skirt hem. Slip and pantalets hand and machine stitched with stain to pantalets - otherwise good condition. Beautiful and hard to find example of a very early doll.
