Antique Russian Icon - The Fiery Ascension Of Elijah - 19 C.:
Antique Russian Icon, 19th CenturyThe Fiery Ascension of the Prophet ElijahThe works and deeds of Elijah, a larger-than-life Old Testament prophet, are recorded in 1 Kings 17-19, 21 and 2 Kings 1-2 of the Bible. The subject of the icon is the final episode in the earthly acts of the Prophet Elijah - his miraculous ascent to heaven in a fiery chariot. Almost as a bonus, the iconographer has also included other scenes from his life and has placed them freely over the wooden surface of the icon. 1. Elijah in the Syrian wilderness where a raven brings him food; 2. Elijah resurrects the widow's son; 3. An angel sustains the prophet. Elijah is shown asleep under a juniper tree. While he sleeps the angel brings him bread and water; 4. Elijah and his disciple, Elisha, cross the waters of the Jordan; 5. Elisha asks for a double dose of Elijah's spirit and power as he ascends to heaven in a fiery chariot. The symbolism of the icon's coloring follows the image that had become established in the Russian Orthodox tradition of Elijah as the "Thunderer" whose activities were associated with thunder and rain, and also fertility and harvest. A beautifully painted and crafted icon. A superb addition to any collection of fine antique icons.Egg tempera on wood.Size: 14 1/2" x 12" x 1 1/4"
