This solidsilver needlecase was made in Russia in a designtechnique called Niello work. This iswhere a black metallicalloy of sulfur combined with copper,silver,or leadisused to fill an incised design on the surface of thesilver. Itcreates permanent black areas where the pattern has been engraved. Oneside is decorated with ascrollingfloral pattern and the other has the Russian word for the Caucasus(KABKA3b).This was a souvenir from that premier area in Russia for holidays. It\'sonthe Black Sea and has a year round mild climate. The silver isn\'tmarked but tests 875/1000 pure.

The conditionisexcellentwith no dents or damage and it fits together snugly. It measures almost2 3/8\"long. Russian thimbles in this technique are often seen but needlecases are rare.Bridget McConnell shows a Russian niello thimble with this sameinscriptionon p. 125 of her book TheStory of the Thimble.
