ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This listing is for an example of a Russian Orthodox Holy Gospels. I have had this book for around 45+ years and have never really done much with it. I got it when I was young because it appeared quite unusual and I thought the silver work on the front and back was very high quality and well done. I think it is time to pass it on to someone that will appreciate it for what it is.... anice religious antique.

I did some research on the piece it appears that the volume was published in Moscow in 1889. It has always been in the condition I found it in, and it is obvious that it was used on a fairly consistent basis. The interior appears to be complete and although there is some foxing to pages the overall interior condition is reasonably good. There do not appear to be any missing pages, and all of the color plates appear to be present. It is obvious that it would benefit from a binding restoration, but I will leave that to the new owner. It may just be that the signs of use help with the provenance of the piece. I originally bought this in the San Francisco area in the very early 70\'s when I moved there.

The volume measure approx 8 x 11.5 inches, and approx 1.5 inches thick.There are a total of 10 pieces of worked silver on the front and back of the volume. There are also 2 silver latches. One is still attached as seen in the images, and one is loose, but still with the volume. The silver work appears to have been partiallygilt originally, as a close examination with a loop when looking for silver marks appeared to show the remnants of the gold. The silver mark on the pieces is 84, indicating a purity of 875, so not quite sterling, but common for this period of Russian work. The marks on the silver indicate that the silver work was from Moscow.

The Cyrillic maker’s marks are on the silver work. In English, they would be rendered FO,which stands for Feodor (Theodore) Ovchinnikov. His firm was founded in 1881 and closed around 1900.

The front cover depicts the resurrected Christ at center and the corners display the four Evangelists together with their corresponding symbol. TheBook of Gospels, or Holy Gospel is not the entire bible. It contains only the books of Mathew, Mark, Luke and John.

The detail and quality of the silveris quite good, although it has not been polished in a long time and could use a good cleaning. The silver work is slightly tarnished, but not damaged in any way other than some normal wear as would be expected.
