Antique Sailor Folk Art Star Inlay Box American Nautical Scrimshaw Whalebone:

Beautiful antique box, mahogany veneer with mahogany, maple and whalebone inlays. Losses, crazed varnish etc. as seen in photos. 8 stars on corners. Front and back each have inlay design (escutcheon is bird's eye maple). Top has whalebone inlays that are colored with red and black designs. 14 3/4" across, 8 1/4" deep, 5 3/4" high. Interior with compartments, a few trim pieces loose, lid has a few trim pieces missing. The top has hinge cut outs opposite side, there is a partial break to one hinge area this side, so probably a later owner made the switch (flipped top around) to better secure hinges. I just noticed top of lid has 4 arc inlays, very darkened and crazed from age, so obviously hard to see. 1 on each side, and front and back. In the 2nd photo. In front of bone inlay, you may be able to detect an arc design going across, from tip of one star to another (the top half of stars on lid have loss as seen in photos).
