A beautifully crafted Norwegian scent box viniagrette known as a Hovedvansaeg. These little boxes were given by young men as a love token declaring their intentions of marriage.

This sweet example displays two kissing love birds on top of the heart and is engraved with the initials AL and DH which would have been the combined initials of the couple. The initials are engraved in the traditional manner with tiny pinpricks.

The design of the scent box dates to circa 1780-1800. It is in good condition, the hinge is strong and the interior retains a good covering of the original gilding. It measures 2.5 inches high x 1.5 inches wide.
