In the late 17th century, the Bishop ofMexico authorized a Catholic devotional medal of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Alimited number of 2 inch bronze medals were minted in Rome, and used as giftsfor wealthy Catholic patrons.

That medal helped the Bishop (Francisco de Aguiar ySeijas) fund the Building of the new Basilica from 1682-1708; one of thosemedals from my mother’s collection, is offered here for your consideration.

Bertha (the late founder of Church-Woman Antiques, whopassed away in 2010), became the principal collector of these medals; none haveever come up for sale, and none are available today except here; in short,she acquired all available medals during her lifetime of collecting all overthe world. This one was acquired in a 1930 estate sale.

The medals in our sales have been inspected byreputable numismatic dealers, and their dating can be confirmed on pages 2& 3 of the book AN INTRODUCTION TO RELIGIOUS MEDALS, by Bob Forrest, andpublished by NUMISMATICA INTERNATIONAL in 2004.

In addition this book has chapters (outlined in the tableof contents), describing each of the categories of medals, their possible placeof pilgrimage (acquisition), and origin of the mint where they were made. Werecommend that anyone serious about collecting medals from this period, acquirea copy of this book.
