Antique Tribal Fijian Bowei Club - 19th Century:
$2600.00

A fascinating, arresting andhighly decorativeantiqueFijian hardwood war club.

Carved from a beautiful piece of age soaked Vesi wood, this artefact hasan attractivedark glossy patina. With along handle broadening into the head, the top half isencircled ina decorative chevron motif known as tavatava; said to represent traditionalFijian tattoos. The contrast between the destructive power ofthis weapon andits sleek, natural beauty is highly striking.

Beneath the tavatava pattern isa series ofincised letters bearing the name: \"EPAKUKI\", anative Fijian spelling of the Biblical name Habbakuk, a minor prophet in the Old Testament. Though other examples are known, inscriptions such as this remain rare, providing asenseof depth and connection to the artefact that isnot often found.

Of all the Polynesian people, the Fijians were the most prolific club makersand are widely recognized as masters of their art. Producing a number of different forms,a warrior would chose a club that suited his stature and natural movements, using different weapons for different purposes. Bowei such as thiswerethought to be embued with their own special powers, andwould have beencarried into battle to be used as a close quarters weapon, wielded in such a way that the the club would smash through bone.

A brutal yet facinating artefact, it is rare to find pieces of this type with inscriptions on the private market.
