Painting of Auguste Strobl from the 1827 original located in the Gallery of Beauties. Auguste Strobl was a German beauty of the 19th century. The daughter of a royal chief accountant. Auguste wears gorgeous red and gold ribbons tied to frame her lovely face. She wears a wonderful sheer blue dress with matching ribbon belt, and a stylish pearl necklace. The dress buttons up the back and has lace details that frame her delicate shoulders. Born:June 24, 1807Died:January 22, 1871,Passau, GermanyIt is unknown how Augusta came to King of Bavaria Ludwig\'s attention, though he wrote poems to her and had her painted by the court painterJoseph Karl Stielerfor his Gallery, but Stieler\'s first version chose a view that over-emphasised her goose-neck and displeased its commissioner. As Ludwig had wanted Strobl\'s beauty documented naturalistically, he forbade Stieler to amend this first version to correct or reduce the neck. Stieler had to paint her again, but this time in an uncomfortable position, with the neck somewhat hidden by a necklace. Ludwig briefly considered placing both Stieler\'s versions in his Gallery, but in the end only chose to take the second one. The first one was lost, perhaps being given back to the artist, until it resurfaced on the art market in 1976 and bought by Munich\'s Residenzmuseum. A miniaturepainting by Stieler of the second version is in a private collection.In 1831, with Ludwig\'s approval, she married theforesterHilber vonErgoldsbach, with whom she had 5 children. Ludwig visited her in 1835 and took this chance to address one last poem to her - he possibly offered her the first version of the painting to her as a present on this occasion, with it being refused. No other details of her life are known.Signature for the aritst is hard to make out. It sits at the very edge of the painting and may have even been cut off to fit into the frame. Please see pictures. This painting is an original water color painting that reproduces the original from 1827 Stieler portrait. This is one of two miniature paintings that I have. They could be paired. The other is of Lady Jane Erskine from 1837 and they are framed in matching Italian Gilt frames. Please see our other listings for more information. Condition: Excellent condition. No missing paint. I believe that it is painted on ivory wafer or a thick vellum. She is perfectly preserved, and in her original Italian tole gilt frame. The frame is in okay condition. It does have some flecks of plaster missing from areas and a crack on the side. Has a curved glass plate that goes over the painting. This does have chipping on the sides only to make it fit the frame. This is how it was made. Shows perfectly when in frame. Orignal painting was made by Joseph Karl Stieler(1 November 1781 – 9 April 1858) aGerman painter commissioned to paint for the Bavarian Kings of the Royal Court from 1820 until 1855.
